The Habit of the Oratory. Finally Available Online.
The Black Oratorian Habit — the distinctive community garment of the Congregation of the Oratory of St Philip Neri — is one of the rarest bespoke vestments to find from an online tailor. ZARB offers this garment for the first time as a fully bespoke, made-to-measure habit shipped worldwide — built to the correct Oratorian specification, to your exact measurements, with free delivery to your Oratory door.
— THE ORATORIAN HABIT — WHAT MAKES IT DISTINCTIVE —
The Oratorian habit is not a Roman cassock. Its defining feature is the diagonal button arrangement: five fabric-covered buttons fastened from the upper right chest running across to the lower left waist — the traditional fastening of the Congregation of the Oratory as founded by St Philip Neri in Rome in 1575. Combined with the distinctive Oratorian collar — white cloth that folds over the raised neck collar — this garment is immediately recognisable as belonging to the Oratorian tradition and no other.
— CHOOSE YOUR CONFIGURATION —
Available in two configurations:
- Black Oratorian Habit — The full habit including the detachable white Oratorian collar. The complete community garment for daily ministry and liturgical use.
- Black Habit + Fascia — The habit with a matching plain black fascia sash, as worn for formal and ceremonial occasions. The plain fascia (without fringe) is the correct Oratorian variant for everyday community wear.

— CARE INSTRUCTIONS —
Dry clean recommended to preserve the wool blend fabric and button integrity. For home care: hand wash gently in cold water on a delicate cycle with a pH-neutral, wool-safe detergent. Hang on a wide hanger to dry — do not tumble dry. Press on a low setting from the reverse side using a pressing cloth. Store the detachable white Oratorian collar separately, folded carefully to preserve the collar's structure.
— FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS —
How is the Oratorian habit different from a standard Roman cassock?: The key distinction is the button placement. A Roman cassock buttons straight down the centre front with 33 buttons. The Oratorian habit features 5 fabric-covered buttons arranged diagonally from the upper right chest to the lower left waist — this diagonal placement is the defining characteristic of the Oratorian tradition as founded by St Philip Neri. The detachable white Oratorian collar is a further distinguishing element.
What is the correct number of folds on the Oratorian collar?: The number of folds on the Oratorian collar traditionally signifies the specific Oratory community — for example, the London Oratory uses four folds. The standard collar we provide follows the general Oratorian format. If your community has a specific fold count, please note this in your order and we will make the collar accordingly.
Is the fascia fringed or plain?: The fascia included in the 'Habit + Fascia' variant is plain black without fringe or tassels. This is the correct Oratorian variant for everyday community wear. The proper Oratorian tassled fascia is a more ceremonial item — if you require this variant, please contact us before ordering to discuss specifications.
Can this be ordered for a new member's reception into the Oratory?: Yes — the habit is traditionally given at formal reception into the community. Please allow the full production time (5–11 working days) plus delivery when planning for a specific reception date, and order with sufficient lead time.
Can I order habits for multiple community members?: Yes. We welcome community and institutional orders. Please contact us before ordering to discuss group pricing and coordinated production timelines.
How long does delivery take to the USA?: Production takes 5–11 working days. Free delivery to the USA takes a further 4–9 business days after dispatch — typically 2–3 weeks in total. All orders include worldwide tracking. Import duties may apply on arrival.
Is this suitable for Brothers of the Little Oratory?: Yes. Brothers of the Little Oratory (lay associates) are traditionally permitted to wear the Oratorian habit while in service on the sanctuary. This habit is suitable for both ordained Oratorian Fathers and Brothers of the Little Oratory.

Overall, I am pleased with the quality of the finished habit. The material is excellent, the craftsmanship is solid, and the overall design is very faithful to the Oratorian habit I provided them as a reference. Since this is not a garment they normally produce, I appreciate the effort they put into replicating it.
There were a few issues, however. One important structural button that helps support the garment while wearing it was omitted. It is a small detail, but an important functional one that should be included in future habits.
Sizing is always difficult with custom garments, especially something as unique as an Oratorian habit. My finished habit is slightly shorter than I would have preferred, and the fascia is a bit tighter than ideal. Thankfully, both are still usable, but this experience reminded me that measurements for garments like these often require some trial and error. Determining the correct length is especially challenging because shoulder curvature, posture, and the clothing worn underneath all affect how the habit ultimately hangs. I have also found that different tailors measure the "length" of a garment somewhat differently, making it difficult to know exactly what measurement to provide.
The biggest consideration for future customers is cost. Because I had to ship my existing habit internationally for them to make a pattern, pay for the custom garment, pay return shipping for the new habit, and still need to pay to have my original habit shipped back, my total investment ended up being roughly three times the cost of one of their standard custom cassocks. Given that they do not normally make Oratorian habits, the additional expense is understandable. However, my final cost is now comparable to what I would pay a local tailor. However, with a local tailor I get the added advantage of being able to return easily for fittings and adjustments. At that point, much of the financial benefit of using an international tailor is diminished.
The collars are stiff and the material I foresee will irritate the skin around the neck. I have requested that future collars be a softer, more comfortable material. They look fine though (as in the listing photos--sorry I don't have a photo of mine).
One other critique would be how the habit opens at the bottom a bit more than I would like when walking or standing. The habit can be designed with extra material to fall straight with little to no excessive opening at the bottom. I have sent this review in to the group and I am hoping they would be able to adjust accordingly for a potential second purchase.
Despite these concerns, I am genuinely happy with the overall result. The habit looks very good, and I appreciate the willingness to undertake such a specialized project. If the pattern they created from my original habit now allows them to produce future habits at a substantially lower price, I would gladly become a repeat customer. If not, then I still consider this to have been a worthwhile attempt at finding a long-term tailor for my Oratorian habits.
